Travel Insurance for Altitude Trekking: |
|
| |
This travel insurance Policy is specially for residents of the Republic of Ireland, and is travel insurance not activity top-up. Therefore the period of cover must be for the whole duration of your trip, not just the part where you will be at altitude.
Cover for Altitude Trekking to 4000m is included at no extra charge.
- Holiday Activities Category (1), where the normal medical excess of €120 applies, covers TREKKING to 1500m.
- Medium Risk Activities Category (4), where the higher medical excess of €450 applies, (covers medical and repatriation costs only) for TREKKING to 4000m.
For trekking above 4000m, we need to refer your request for cover to our underwriters, giving the details outlined below. If agreed, there is usually no extra charge for trekking above 4000m, as it is categorised as a High Risk Activities Category (5), where the higher medical excess of €750 applies, (covers medical and repatriation costs only).
Otherwise, please contact us if you need confirmation that your holiday altitude trekking plans are covered.

Take out the insurance you require to the 'pay later' stage:
- Please get a quote for the insurance you require. There will be no extra charge for altitude trekking so that is what you will pay.
- It is not activity top-up insurance, so if it is single trip insurance the duration must be the whole duration of your trip.
- Continue to Take out Insurance following on from the quotation stage, and enter your name(s), age(s) and other details but take the 'pay later' option, so you do not get insured or have to pay at this stage. This just avoids having to give these personal details in an email.
Send an email to our Customers Services, csm@etravelinsure.com, with the following information:
- For treks other than Inca Trail and Mt Kilimanjaro, please attach a brochure or give a link to the website of the trek organiser, which describes the trek. Briefly, we need to know: the route of ascent and descent, that it is an organised trek, that you will be accompanied by experienced guides, the highest point of the trek, and the time (days) that will be spent above 4000m, if trekking on glaciers is involved, and that no mountaineering as such is involved.
- For Mount Kilimanjaro, please confirm it is an organised trek, and give the name of the route (or the names the ascent and descent routes).
- For Inca Trail, please just confirm it is an organised trek following a normal route of the trail.
- Please confirm that you (and other persons to be insured) are currently in good health, and that you have no health problems, particularly no respiratory problems, and that you have not had previous problems at altitude;
- Any other relevant information, such as: training and acclimatisation plans, previous experience of trekking at altitude.
Allow one working day at least for referral of your request to our underwriters. If cover is approved, we shall notify you by email, and request a convenient time to phone for payment details if you wish to proceed with the insurance.
