This page summarises the main points on what is and what is not covered, and the main conditions for participation in paragliding. If your holiday plans for paragliding do not seem to be covered, please contact us by email to explain your requirements.

Paragliding - What is covered:
  • Cover for Parachuting, Skydiving, Paragliding and Hang-gliding are no longer in High Risk category (5) in our Schedule of Activities, but are now (from 2009) in category 6, and are now covered under Section (U), with no cover for participating whilst in USA. Cover for participating elsewhere worldwide is now at additional premium. Cover continues to be for participation as an amateur, to amateur competition level, in safe conditions, with no time limit on participation.
  • Medical & Repatriation costs : are costs incurred due to an accident or illness sustained abroad (outside your Home Country); it covers transport to a suitable hospital to receive necessary emergency medical treatment, and for being repatriated if necessary. Please read Section(A) of the policy for full details of Medical cover.
  • Paragliding with travel insurance : This is a Travel Insurance policy, not activity top-up insurance, therefore the period of cover as per your certificate of insurance must be for the whole duration of a trip, not just the period of participating in paragliding. Insurance must be taken out prior to departure from your home country. Normal travel insurance applies when not participating in paragliding.
  • Rescue costs : costs of transport to a suitable hospital are covered under Section (A) of the policy only when emergency medical treatment is needed.
  • Search & Rescue costs : Section (T) of our policy provides limited but useful additional cover for other 'search & rescue' costs when provided by any recognised rescue service, and when costs are not related to a medical emergency.
Paragliding - What is not covered :
  • Participating whilst in USA is not covered.
  • Personal Liability is not covered (that is you causing injury or damage) when paragliding; therefore, it is essential to have this type of cover from some other source, usually through your paragliding organisation.
  • Personal Accident is not covered (compensation for death or permanent disablement), not to be confused with emergency medical costs which are covered.
  • Paragliding Equipment
  • Dangerous expeditions - there is a General Exclusion for going anywhere that is extremely remote, or which is outside the range of normal rescue facilities.

Paragliding - policy wording : Paragliding cover is for medical emergency & repatriation and search & rescue costs.

The relevant sections of the policy for full details are:

Hazardous Adventure Sports
The Schedule of Activities is part of the policy, which is accessed via the Sports & Activities button on the adjacent menu bar, and it gives details of the cover provided for all Holiday and Hazardous Adventure sports and activities covered, and conditions that apply to mountain biking. In conjunction with this Schedule, Section (S) of the policy it sets out certain basic conditions for "safe and normal" participation, for paragliding:

  • weather conditions and official forecasts of conditions are suitable for 'safe and normal' participation, for your level of experience, throughout the whole sequence from take-off to landing,
  • the 'take off' area is approved or considered safe for paragliding by a local or national regulatory authority,
  • do not 'take off' without having someone viewing or monitoring your flight or knowing of your plans,
  • be reasonably fit to take part,
  • wear suitable protective clothing, including helmet,
  • have the right equipment for the conditions,
  • observe the safety procedures recommended.

Inform us by email well beforehand of the circumstances if it is likely that these conditions are not going to apply, as we shall need to give specific approval of cover according to the circumstances.
